commandant, n.|ˌkɒmənˈdɑːnt, -æ-| [a. Fr. commandant, in same sense, orig. pr. pple. = ‘commanding’: cf. It., Sp., and Pr. comandante, Pg. commandante.] a. A commanding officer, a commander: irrespective of rank. Applied esp. to the military governor of a fortress, town, or district, and often as a foreign title, French, Spanish, or Portuguese. Used in the wars of 1914–18 and 1939–45 as the title of an officer holding a special command, as of a place, depot, or the like, or of a particular force.
