L. commentātor, agent-noun from commentāri (see commentation); hence = ‘inventor, author’ (Tertull.), the modern sense is associated with that of comment, commentary. So mod.F. commentateur.] †1. A writer of historical ‘commentaries’, a chronicler. Obs. rare.
