ˈslide-rule Also slide rule. [f. slide v.] A sliding rule. spec. A device whereby multiplication and division, and sometimes other mathematical operations, may be performed with speed but limited accuracy, consisting essentially of two rules marked with logarithmic scales and capable of being slid along one another, and usually also a transparent cursor marked with a line crossing the scales, so that a required result may be obtained by inspection after proper movement of these. Also fig. This, not sliding rule, is now the usual name.
