somatostatin Physiol.|ˌsəʊmətəʊˈstætɪn| [See quot. 1973.] A peptide secreted in the hypothalamus and elsewhere whose actions include the inhibition of the release of various hormones, esp. from the anterior pituitary.
1973P. Brazeau et al. in Science 5 Jan. 79/3 We propose to name the peptide described here somatostatin, from somato(tropin), a pituitary factor affecting statural growth, and stat(in), from the Latin ‘to halt, to arrest’. 1976Nature 10 June 511/2 Somatostatin inhibits the release of growth hormone, thyrotropin and prolactin from the pituitary, of glucagon and insulin from the pancreas, and also of gastrin. 1977Lancet 23 July 166/2 Somatostatin, a tetradecapeptide first isolated from the hypothalamus.., has been demonstrated in large quantities in the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas. Hence ˌsomatostatiˈnoma Path., a tumour secreting excessive quantities of somatostatin.
1977Lancet 26 Mar. 668/1 Measurements of insulin and glucagon responses during a glucose-tolerance test in somatostatinoma patients may help to explain this apparent association. 1978Jrnl. R. Soc. Med. LXXI. 173 This somatostatinoma gave rise to the clinical abnormalities of hypochlorhydria, steatorrhoea, and a diabetic glucose tolerance curve. |
