somatotopic, a. Neurol.|ˌsəʊmətəʊˈtɒpɪk| [f. somato- + Gr. τοπικ-ός in respect to place (see topic a. and n.).] Characterized by or being a relationship between the locations of neurones in the central nervous system and in the tissues they serve. Also somatoˈtopical a., in the same sense.
1945Federation Proc. IV. 31/1 Liminal faradic excitation of the cerebellar cortex reveals somatotopic localization in the anterior lobe and lobulus simplex of decerebrate animals. 1958A. Brodal Neurol. Anat. iii. 42 Here again is an example of a somatotopical arrangement of a fibre system. 1965Jrnl. Anat. XCIX. 761 (heading) Correlation between nuclear morphology and somatotopic organization in the ventro-basal complex of the raccoon's thalamus. 1969Truex & Carpenter Human Neuroanat. (ed. 6) xvii. 423/1 In the cat there is evidence that corticopontine fibers arising from the sensorimotor cortex project in a somatotopical manner onto two longitudinally oriented cell columns within the pontine nuclei. 1976Nature 20 May 190/3 Physiologists have revealed a strict somatotopic map of the skin in the spinal cord. Hence ˌsomatoˈtopically adv., in a manner which preserves such a relationship; ˈsomatotopy (rare), somatotopic relationship.
1948A. Brodal Neurol. Anat. vi. 161 They have mapped out the areas giving response when different parts of the skin are stimulated, and established a pattern which mainly corresponds to that gained from study of human cases. The body is represented somatotopically, with a certain overlapping between adjacent dermatomes. 1961Lancet 2 Sept. 546/2 Discriminative sensation travels by the lemniscal pathway and is relayed somatotopically via the thalamus to the cortex. 1976Progress in Sci. Culture (E. Majorana Centre) Spring 48 The analysis of the properties, of these two inputs, in terms of somatotopy, frequency of discharge, sensory modality, timing and interaction between them suggests that integration of the information channelled through the two inputs on the same Purkyně cell is a basic mechanism of cerebellar operation. |
