Soumak|ˈsuːmæk| Also Soumac, Sumac, etc. [Orig. uncertain, perh. a corruption of the Azerbaijan place-name Shemakha.] A type of rug or carpet made in the neighbourhood of Shemakha in Azerbaijan, distinguished by a flat, napless surface and loose threads at the back. Freq. attrib. Cf. Kashmir 2.
