crocin Chem.|ˈkrəʊsɪn| [f. L. croc-us saffron + -in.] A red powder, the colouring matter of Chinese Yellow pods, the fruit of Gardenia grandiflora, with which the robes of Chinese mandarins are dyed. A supposed product of the action of hydrochloric acid on crocin is ˈcrocetin.
