单词 Cro-Magnon
释义 Cro-Magnon|krəʊˈmænjɔ̃, krəʊˈmægnən|
Also Cromagnon.
[The name of a hill of Cretaceous limestone in the Dordogne department of France in a cave at the base of which skeletons of Homo sapiens were found in 1868 among deposits of Upper Palæolithic age; it had previously been supposed that modern man did not exist in Palæolithic times.]
Used, chiefly attrib., to designate a group of mankind characterized by a long low skull, a wide face, and wide orbits having upper and lower borders close to one another and almost parallel; the stature is moderate or tall.
The group persisted in Mesolithic and Neolithic times, and some authorities consider that it survived in the Guanches of the Canary Islands. Similar skeletal features can be detected in certain modern European and north African peoples.
