Gr. κρυπτός hidden + γάµος wedlock; after the Linnæan class-name cryptogamia. Brongniart in 1843 first divided the Vegetable Kingdom into Cryptogamæ, and Phanerogamæ, whence F. cryptogames, Eng. cryptogams, etc.] A plant of the class Cryptogamia.
