The French word cryptozoologie is reported by B. Heuvelmans and others to have been coined by him in the 1950s, but it has not been found in his published work of the time (either in French or in English translations). Heuvelmans himself attributes an independent earlier coinage in English to I. T. Sanderson: see quot. 1968 (and compare quot. 1961 cryptozoological adj.).]
The study of extinct, unknown, or legendary animals whose existence or survival is not (or has not yet been) recognized by mainstream zoology.
