1. a. One who raises, in various senses of the vb. Also, a nurseryman who breeds or cultivates new varieties of plants.

a. A riser (of a stair).
b. A start or shoulder of a water-wheel bucket.

4. Bridge.
a. A player who increases his partner's bid.
