[Hindī rājā, Skr. rājan king, etc., f. rāj to reign, rule; cognate with L. rēx, rēg-is, OIr. rī, rīg king (see rich).]
Originally the title given in India to a king or prince; in later times extended to petty chiefs or dignitaries (as Zemindars) or conferred as a title of nobility on Hindus, and adopted as the usual designation of Malay and Javanese rulers or chiefs (cf. quot. 1777).
