curite Min.|ˈkjʊəraɪt| [a. F. curite (A. Schoep 1921, in Compt. Rend. CLXXIII. 1186), f. the name of Pierre Curie (see curie) + -ite1.] An orange-red hydrated oxide of lead and uranium.
1922Nature 12 Jan. 63/1 The mineral was found at Kasolo, Belgian Congo, and occurs along with curite and chalcolite. 1938R. W. Lawson tr. Hevesy & Paneth's Man. Radioactivity (ed. 2) xv. 150 The mineral curite..contains no trace of ordinary lead. 1958C. Frondel in Bull. U.S. Geol. Surv. No. 1064. 95 Curite is a secondary mineral formed with other hydrated uranyl or lead-uranyl oxides by the alteration of uraninite. The lead of the mineral seems to be radiogenic and derived from the uraninite. |
