A symbol of reckless extravagance and waste, first used in government publicity campaigns to promote economy during the war of 1939–45 and represented as a devilish insect; a likeness of this. Also, one who is profligate with money or resources. Hence ˈsquanderbugging.
Introduced in 1943 by the National Savings Committee.
