primase, n. Biochem.|ˈpraɪmeɪz| [f. primer n.2 + -ase.] Any enzyme which catalyses the synthesis of primers, esp. of primer DNA or RNA.
1977R. McMacken et al. in Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. LXXIV. 4190/1 Among the single-stranded..phage DNAs thus far tested in replication systems in vitro, the ϕX174 class is unique in being converted first to a multiprotein intermediate..to enable the synthesis of a primer by dnaG protein (primase). 1978Rowen & Kornberg in Jrnl. Biol. Chem. CCLIII. 758/2 Based on its role in priming DNA replication rather than in transcribing DNA regions for synthesis of messenger or other defined RNAs, [etc.]..we propose that the dnaG protein be designated primase. 1982T. M. Devlin Textbk. Biochem. xvii. 855 In other systems, including phage ϕ, initiation is achieved by the action of a primase. 1986Ann. Rev. Biochem. LV. 760 Primase synthesizes 5′-terminal oligoribonucleotides of discrete length, about 10 nucleotides, and of random sequence. |
