Stanhope|ˈstænhəʊp, ˈstænəp| [f. the proper name Stanhope (see below).] 1. a. A light open one-seated vehicle, formerly made with two wheels, but subsequently commonly with four. First made for the Hon. and Rev. Fitzroy Stanhope (1787–1864). Often written with small initial.
