statolon Biochem.|ˈstætəlɒn| Also erron. statalon. [Prob. a blend of mod.L. stoloniferum (see below and stoloniferous a.) and -static.] A complex polysaccharide obtained from the mould Penicillium stoloniferum, now known to contain a fungal virus which is an antiviral agent, stimulating the release of interferon.
1961Probst & Kleinschmidt in Federation Proc. XX. 441/2 A fermentation broth of Pen. stoloniferium [sic] prophylactically inhibits a number of viruses both in animals and in tissue culture... The active principle, designated as statolon, has been subjected to a variety of purification procedures. 1964Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. LII. 741 Statolon is a complex anionic polysaccharide with a relatively high content of galacturonic acid. 1967New Scientist 10 Aug. 300/2 W. J. Kleinschmidt and L. F. Ellis have now refined the technique of fractionating statalon, and have discovered, to their surprise, that one of the active fractions contained numerous virus-like hexagonal particles... They have confirmed that..it is these particles that are responsible for stimulating interferon activity in mice. 1971Sci. Amer. July 28/2 Eli Lilly and Company demonstrated the presence of a fungal virus in statalon, an extract of another penicillium species. 1976P. Collard Devel. Microbiol. v. 64 There are a number of compounds that either stimulate the production of interferon in the host cells, as does Statolon, originally believed to be a fungal product but now shown to be a virus, or release interferon which is already pre-formed in the cells. 1978Nature 29 June 760/1 Tilorone, statolon and Newcastle disease virus (NDV), all potent inducers of interferon in mice, induced a marked increase in spleen cell cytotoxicity. |
