(hôr-mz, hôrmŭz′), Strait of also Strait of Or·muz (ôr-mz, ôrmŭz′) A strategic waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. The narrow strait controls oceangoing traffic to and from the oil-rich Gulf States.
