n. An infectious respiratory disease of humans and other animals caused by inhaling fungi of the genus Coccidioides. It is usually characterized by fever and respiratory symptoms but sometimes develops into a severe form in which the lungs, bones, skin, and central nervous system can be affected. Also called valley fever.
[New Latin Coccidioīdēs, genus name (from Coccidium, former genus name; see COCCIDIUM + -oīdēs, from Greek -oeidēs, -oid) + MYCOSIS.]
