The city and its environs quickly grew with the railroads, becoming a major rail terminal in the late 1860s and 1870s.

It was founded as a rail terminal for the area, and still serves as such.

The building lobby currently displays a number of artifacts left over from its days as once an exceptionally active interurban rail terminal.

There were plans for a new rail terminal, joined to the airport's passenger terminal and multi-storey car park.

This combined rail terminal and office block was the first of its kind in any city.
