By 1965, the survival rates after receiving a kidney transplant from an unrelated donor exceeded 65%.

Unrelated donors far much less often a close match but successful operations can be done in people who are not perfect matches.

Success rates are better for patients who have donors that are matched siblings and worse for patients who receive their marrow from unrelated donors.

Of these, 28,901 (57%) were autologous and 21,516 (43%) were allogenetic (11,928 from family donors and 9,588 from unrelated donors).

It established the future use of unrelated donors to patients, so far for over 10,000 people.
