The path exits the woodland edge and over an old stone wall covered in moss and liverworts, it crosses a swathe of delicate leaves and pale petals.

In nature these woodland edge plants (such as lungwort, wood spurge, dicentra and bugle) thrive in leaf mould-rich soils resulting from years of foliage litter falling from above.

They have abundant broad leaves, and young trees quickly spring up beneath the older ones, so they often form great leafy screens along a woodland edge.

However, they have been waiting to set up their spring territories, and now they are beginning to announce with their songs their ownership of a garden or a woodland edge.
