Turrets were used to provide a projecting defensive position allowing covering fire to the adjacent wall in the days of military fortification.

Cities were smaller military fortifications, defended by soldiers, protecting the civilians who lived in the surrounding countryside (my article in this issue explores this more deeply).

They prefer trade wars to actual wars; border walls to military fortifications.

Historically, the islands were used for military fortifications, and remnants, as well as a museum, exhibit this history.
