单词 ageratum
释义

ageratumn.

Brit. /ˌadʒəˈreɪtəm/, U.S. /ˌædʒəˈreɪdəm/
Forms: 1500s–1800s ageraton, 1500s– ageratum.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin agēraton; Latin Ageratum.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin agēraton, name of a plant, perhaps a species of achillea (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ἀγήρατον , name of a plant, perhaps pot marjoram (Dioscorides), use as noun of neuter of ancient Greek ἀγήρατος not growing old < ἀ- a- prefix6 + γῆρατ- , γῆρας old age (see geriatrics n.). In later use < scientific Latin Ageratum, genus name (Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) 839, after earlier use by J. Pitton de Tournefort Inst. rei herbariæ (1700) I. 652 for a different group of plants (see sense 1) < classical Latin agēraton). Compare Middle French, French †ageraton (1556), French agérate (1751), ageratum (1752).With the Greek name compare the (apparently independent) similarly-formed Sanskrit ajarā , lit. ‘not subject to old age’, also denoting a kind of aloe ( < a- a- prefix6 + a form of jṝ- to grow old, ultimately < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek γῆρας).
1. A scented plant with yellow everlasting flowers, usually identified with an achillea, Achillea ageratum (also called sweet maudlin). Also: a preparation of this plant, used medicinally. Obsolete.
