Etymology: < Greek κατιόν (a thing) going down, neuter of present participle of κατ-ιέναι to go down, < κατά down + ἰ- go.
An ion carrying a positive charge which moves towards the cathode (negative electrode) during electrolysis. Opposed to anion.
