Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French agrape.
Etymology: < Middle French agrape, agrappe hook and eye fastening on a garment (1522; 1295 in Old French in sense ‘hook’) < agraper (reflexive) to grab (end of the 12th cent.) < a- a- prefix5 + grappe , grape hook (see grape n.1; compare grape n.2). Compare earlier agraffe n.
historical and rare.
Chiefly in plural = agraffe n.In English attested only in dictionaries and encyclopedias of costume, in later use perhaps after Fairholt.
