Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese cavaquinho.
Etymology: < Portuguese cavaquinho (1701 or earlier) < cavaco a wood chip, also the name of an instrument with four (or sometimes six) strings (13th cent.; < cava cellar, hole ( < classical Latin cava : see cave n.1) + -aco , suffix forming popular derivative nouns) + -inho , diminutive suffix ( < classical Latin -īnus : see -ine suffix4).
Chiefly in Brazil: a four-stringed musical instrument similar to a ukulele.
