Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: violoncello n.
Etymology: Shortened < violoncello n. Compare German Cello (1813); Italian cello is apparently not attested until much later (second half of the 20th cent.).In plural form 'celli after violoncelli, plural of violoncello n. Compare the following comment on the form 'cello and the plural form in -i:1954 Grove's Dict. Music II. 138/2 Cello..may be considered as having become an English word by adoption, and there is thus no necessity to spell it with an apostrophe ('cello), as is still frequently done, nor is the Italian plural (celli) desirable.
Music.
1. A large four-stringed bowed musical instrument, smaller than a double bass, which is held between the knees of the seated player, and now usually rests on a metal spike attached to its base.
