Etymology: < German Celloidin (R. Thoma 1873 in Chemisches Central-Blatt 4 541) < Cell- (in Cellulose cellulose n.) + -oid -oid suffix + -in suffix1.
Chemistry.
A preparation of pyroxylin (nitrocellulose) in ether and alcohol, used chiefly in microscopy for embedding specimens of tissues so that sections may be prepared. Cf. collodion n.
