Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: cellulose n., -lysis comb. form.
Etymology: < cellulo- (in cellulose n.) + -lysis comb. form, after French cellulolyse (1937 or earlier). Compare earlier cellulolytic adj.
Biology.
The chemical decomposition of cellulose.
