Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Celto- comb. form, -logue comb. form.
Etymology: < Celto- comb. form + -logue comb. form, perhaps after French Celtologue (1828 or earlier) and German Keltologe (1844 or earlier), now the usual words for a Celticist in these languages. Compare earlier Celtologist n. and Celticist n.
Now rare.
A student of or expert in Celtic languages and philology.In later use, typically used as a conscious archaism with reference to scholars of the 19th cent.
