Excessive enthusiasm for or fascination with whatever is Celtic (in various senses of Celtic adj.); (sometimes) spec. over-emphasis of the significance of the ancient Celts; a tendency to propose a Celtic origin for words, languages, peoples, etc. Cf. Celtomaniac n.Frequently used (disparagingly) with reference to the work of 18th- and early 19th-cent. philologists and antiquarians; cf. the note at Celt n.1 1b. ΚΠ 1834 W. Weir & G.
