Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from Japanese. Etymons: German Akoja; Japanese akoya.
Etymology: < German Akoja (a1716 in the passage translated in quot. 1727, now usually Akoya ) and (in later use) its etymon Japanese akoya (12th cent.; 1603 in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam as Acoya ), short for akoya-dama akoya pearl (10th cent.) < Akoya , the former name of Honda, a coastal town in the Aichi prefecture, Japan (known for the abundance in pearl oysters in its bay) + -dama , combining form of tama ball, gem, bead (see magatama n.). Compare also Japanese akoya-gai, literally ‘akoya shell’ (formerly also akoya no kai; 1603 in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam as Acoyano cai).
Any of several small marine oysters of the genus Pinctada, esp. P. fucata, cultivated in Japan, China, and elsewhere for the production of cultured pearls. Also: a pearl so produced, typically round, white, and lustrous. Usually attributive as Akoya oyster, Akoya pearl, etc.Until the second half of the 20th cent. apparently only in translations of, after, or with allusion to E. Kämpfer Hist. Japan (see quot. 1727).
