单词 al borak
释义

Al Borakn.

Brit. /ˈal bərak/, U.S. /ˈæl bəˌræk/
Forms: 1600s Alborach, 1700s Al bourak, 1700s– Alborak, 1800s– Al Borak, 1800s– al-Buraq, 1800s– el-Burak, 1900s– al-Boraq, 1900s– el-Bourak, 1900s– El-Buraq, 2000s– al-Bouraq.
Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic al-burāq.
Etymology: < Arabic al-burāq < al the + burāq the white animal on which the prophet Muhammad performed the Night Journey, further etymology uncertain and disputed: either a diminutive of baraq flash, lightning ( < baraqa to flash, to lighten) or perhaps a loanword < an unknown donor language. Compare post-classical Latin Alborach (1544 or earlier), French al-Bouraq (1553 as Alborach, or earlier), Spanish Al-Borak, Alborach (c1270 as alborath).Although the earliest evidence in English relates to Ottoman Turkey, the word appears to have been borrowed directly < Arabic; compare Ottoman Turkish Burāq (Turkish Burak), consistently without the Arabic article.
Islam.
(The name of) the white animal on which the prophet Muhammad performed the Night Journey; an animal resembling this.Accounts of the exact nature of this animal vary, but it is uniformly described as a white quadruped of the nature of a horse, able to travel at lightning speed. Hadith literature portrays the animal as larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule, while in later legends it takes the form of a winged white horse, often with a human face and the tail of a peacock.
