Etymology: < classical Latin celebrant-, celebrāns, present participle of celebrāre celebrate v. Compare Italian celebrante (a1419), German Zelebrant (14th cent. or earlier in Middle High German or early modern German as celebrant), French célébrant (1680), all in sense ‘priest who officiates at the Eucharist’.
1. A person who performs a religious rite or formal ceremony, as a marriage, funeral, etc.; spec. a priest who officiates at the Eucharist.
