Etymology: < French céleri (not in Cotgrave), according to Littré < dialect Italian sellari, plural of sellaro (Brescian ˈseleno, literary Italian ˈsedano), representing Greek σέλινον parsley.
a. An umbelliferous plant ( Apium graveolens) cultivated for the use of its blanched stalks as a salad and vegetable; in its wild form (smallage n.) indigenous in some parts of England.
