Origin: Perhaps a borrowing from German, combined with an English element. Etymons: German coelestina , -et suffix1.
Etymology: Perhaps < German coelestina, used to denote various keyboard instruments involving strings (1742 or earlier; < classical Latin caelestis celest adj. + -ina -ine suffix4; perhaps so called as the instrument was thought to produce a heavenly sound) + -et suffix1. Compare English celestina, denoting a similar bowed keyboard instrument (1771 or earlier).
Obsolete rare.
