Origin: Either (i) from a proper name, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: proper name Alabama , -ian suffix; Alabama n., -ian suffix.
Etymology: In sense A. 1 either < the name of the Alabama river + -ian suffix, or an alteration of Alabama n. after words in -ian suffix. In senses A. 2 and B. < the name of the U.S. state of Alabama (see Alabama n.) + -ian suffix. Compare Alabaman n., Alabaman adj.
