Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish alameda.
Etymology: < Spanish alameda place where poplar trees grow (1322 or earlier as a count noun; late 12th cent. as a place name in documents from Toledo), probably < álamo poplar tree (1272), of uncertain origin (see further J. Corominas Diccionario crítico etimológico de la lengua castellana (1981) at álamo) + a suffix perhaps ultimately < classical Latin -ētum -etum suffix.
In Spain, Latin America, and other areas of Spanish influence: a public walkway or promenade, shaded with trees.
