Origin: A borrowing from Latin; partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin adunation-, adunatio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin adunation-, adunatio mystical union (3rd cent.; 6th cent. with reference to the union of the divine and human natures in the person of Christ), (of people) meeting, gathering (6th cent.) < adunat- , past participial stem of adunare to unite (see adunate adj.) + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1. In recent use after French (rare) adunation (14th cent. in Middle French; used by E.-J. Sieyès, French politician, in 1789 (in a speech before the Constituant Assembly) or earlier). Compare earlier adunate adj.
The combining of two or more things into a single entity; union, combination.Now only with reference to E.-J. Sieyès (see quot. 2002).
