Etymology: < post-classical Latin centesimation-, centesimatio (1551 or earlier; < centesimat- , past participial stem of centesimare centesimate v. + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1, after post-classical Latin decimation- , decimatio decimation n.); compare -ation suffix. Compare earlier decimation n. and later centesimate v.
Chiefly Roman History. rare.
With reference to military punishment: the selection by lot of every hundredth person for execution. Cf. decimation n. 2a.
