Etymology: < Italian centesimo coin worth one-hundredth of a lira or of another currency unit (1800), specific use of centesimo hundredth part (a1321) < classical Latin centēsimus hundredth (see centesm n.). In quot. 1840 via German Centesimo (1837 in the passage translated, or earlier). Compare earlier centime n.In plural form centesimi after the Italian plural form.

In Italy: a monetary unit equal to one-hundredth of a lira; (also) a coin of this value.The 1 centesimo coin was not struck after 1918, and centesimo coins of all denominations ceased to be minted after 1943.

Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish centésimo.
Etymology: < Spanish centésimo (1846 or earlier denoting a monetary unit in various South American countries, e.g. Chile; 1808 or earlier denoting a U.S. cent, 1816 or earlier denoting a French centime), specific use of centésimo hundredth part (18th cent. or earlier; early 15th cent. in sense ‘hundredth’) < classical Latin centēsimus hundredth (see centesm n.). Compare earlier centesimo n.1In Encycl. Brit. (ed. 9, 1878) and some other 19th-cent. sources centesimo is listed as the subdivision of the Spanish peseta, but the official name for this unit was céntimo centimo n., and centésimo does not appear ever to have been formally adopted. Compare:1878 Encycl. Brit. XVI. 732 The unit in the different states is called by different names: in France, Belgium, and Switzerland, franc and centime;..in Spain, peseta and centesimo; but in all cases the value is the same.
In Uruguay, Panama, and (formerly) Chile: a monetary unit worth one hundredth of the main unit of currency; (also) a coin of this value.The centesimo is worth one hundredth of the peso in Uruguay and of the balboa in Panama. The Chilean centesimo was in use between 1960 and 1975, and was worth one hundredth of the former base unit the escudo.
