Etymology: < Christ n. + tide n. Compare slightly later Christmastide n. at Christmas n.1 and int. Compounds 2.Compare Old Frisian kristtīd and kristestīd (West Frisian krysttyd), early modern Dutch kors-tijdt (early 17th cent.; Dutch (now regional) kersttijd, karstijd), in the same sense. Compare occasional use of Old English Cristes tīd, as a genitive compound or a genitive phrase, with reference to Christmas.

Christmas. Cf. Christmastide n. at Christmas n.1 and int. Compounds 2.Frequently used by Puritans in the early modern period in preference to Christmas, due to the Catholic associations of its second element (mass).
