Etymology: < French chambranle (1518 in Middle French; earlier as †chambramlle (1389 in Middle French)), probably an alteration (by folk-etymological association with branler to shake (see branle v.), although the semantic motivation is unclear) of chambrande (1313) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *camerandus or its neuter singular *camerandum , use as noun of gerundive of post-classical Latin camerare (see camerate v.), thus literally ‘something which must be arched’.
