Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: centre v., -ment suffix.
Etymology: < centre v. + -ment suffix. N.E.D. (1889) gives the definition ‘the action of centring; that in or about which anything is centred’. This was based on the following quotation, which represents a misreading of centrepoint (for correct reading see quot. 1877 for centre point n. at centre n.1 and adj. Compounds 1):1882 Cassell's Encycl. Dict. II. i. 122/3 [Quoting R. L. Stevenson] That state in which another person becomes to us the very gist and centrement of God's creation. Compare earlier use in self-centrement ( < self- prefix + centre v. + -ment suffix, probably after self-centred adj.):1856 Brit. Controversialist New Ser. 1 195 This tendency towards self-centrement educes in each the feeling of personality.
