Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Latin centripetus , -ence suffix; centripetency n.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin centripetus (see centripetal adj.) + -ence suffix, or an alteration (after words in -ence suffix) of centripetency n. Compare French centripétence (1771). Compare earlier centripetency n. and its etymon post-classical Latin centripetentia . Compare also earlier centrifugence n.
Now rare.
