Any member of the (former) genus Centronotus, comprising fishes having stiff spines in the anterior part of the dorsal fin, or anterior to it, typically found in shallow seas. Centronotus was a large genus whose members are now placed in various genera of several different families, including Stichaeidae and Pholidae.
