Etymology: < (i) French centuple (c1365 in Middle French), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin centuplus (Vulgate), alteration (after duplus duple adj., triplus triple adj.) of centuplex (5th cent.), variant of classical Latin centumplex (Plautus; compare also post-classical Latin centiplex (4th cent.)) < centum hundred (see centum n.2) + -plic- , -plex -plex suffix1. Compare earlier double adj.1, treble adj., quadruple adj., quintuple adj. Compare slightly earlier centuple v.
A hundred times as many or as much; a hundredfold. Also: consisting of a hundred parts or things. Also in hyperbolic use.
