Origin: Of multiple origins. Apparently partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin centuria , -ation suffix; Latin centuriātiōn-, centuriātiō.
Etymology: In sense 1 apparently < centuria century n. + -ation suffix, after decimation n. In sense 2 independently < classical Latin centuriātiōn-, centuriātiō division of land into centuries < centuriāt- , past participial stem of centuriāre centuriate v. + -iō -ion suffix1.
1. Apparently: a reduction to one-hundredth. Cf. decimation n. 2d. Obsolete.Apparently an isolated use.
