Etymology: Imitative. Compare earlier changing n.2, and also earlier chink n.3, clang n.
Now somewhat rare (Scottish and English regional (northern) in early use).
A ringing or resonant sound; a representation of this. Also: clamour; noisy talk.

Forms: 1800s chong, 1800s– chang, 1900s– chaang, 1900s– chhang, 2000s– chhaang.
Origin: A borrowing from Tibetan. Etymon: Tibetan chhang.
Etymology: < Tibetan chhang any kind of fermented alcoholic drink (e.g. beer, wine, etc.), also specifically one made from barley and yeast.
A Tibetan beer typically made from barley, rice, or millet.
